Aren't legit keys only found in retail boxes and cannot be generated by key generators? ( the key generators keys work for installs though )

Yes, they are only found in retail boxes. A friend gave me his FEAR key, because he never used it for online (crappy internet speed). He had a legit key, and gave it to me cuz all he ever did was play single-player. I've had no problems with this, and I've had it for about a year now.

You could always just buy the game on steam, or activate the game on steam with a retail cd key. This will eliminate the DRM, and there won't be any sneaky files.

no actually they publically stated in MANY articles that steam will have the same DRM form.

Well its pretty unlikely that people have friends who are willing to give them CD keys for games they want so my argument that you cant play multi when downloading games still holds.

Try not to multi-post..use the edit button ;).

It holds, and it doesn't hold. Like I said before, if you download a game, but use a retail (bought) CD key...online works. If you use a keygen, then no, it won't work because the key will not be recognized on their servers. So my point is this: as long as you have a legit key, you can use w/e source you want for the game (majority of my games are downloaded...I'll try it out and if I like it, I buy it and support the developer).

so long as you're at least doing like carnagex you are ok...although I think it's still not allowed in their eyes, lol...because it's an altered version

I would think one person's "rootkit" is another person's anti-piracy algorythm...chances are that's how it is legally and you can't do much about it...though interesting to see.

I have games with starforce...that sucks...but I buy them and hold nothing against whoever uses it or who made it...

ALSO, for those more familiar...aren't the install limits only applicable to "unreported" installs? ie., non phoned home installs? The anti-p will only kick in the copy of the game has exceeded a given number...then all you have to do, as the legal owner, is contact the game maker to get things straightened out? Assuming as well, that you have to reg your info with the game...kinda like warranty cards :D

Not to my knowledge. the counter is absolute.

And at least in the US, it has been decided historically that rootkits are illegal, I'm citing the Sony case a few years back. Companies can't do that. It's a direct invasion of privacy and it has the ability to interfere with the operation of a pc.

ironically I heard EA got part of the SecuROM DRM technology from Sony actually
