Sbk08 for pc

Hi - bought the game for my husband as he has been wanting it for ages but when I try and play it comes up with CANNOT INITIALIZE DIRECT X - saw previous posts (2008) about fax modem, I have a built in on one that is with the DELL computer it is a CONEXANT which I did not disconnect but DISABLED. My operating system is Vista which I only got about 6 months ago so all programmes drivers etc are new. I also installed the patch from the SBK website but still nothing - HELP PLEASE
