No sound

I have a compaq presario SR1834NX. i used the system restore disk and the drivers for sound wernt installed. I ended up getting a legal copy of windows Xp pro. i installed the realtek AC97 driver and it doesn't work. I checked the compaq web site and they dont have any sound drivers. when is check the soound settings on the control pannel it says there is no audi devices anymore NEED HELP. please

When you go to Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager, is there any question marks on the device or just no device. If you need an updated driver, go here:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/

If it is not visible at all, check the BIOS on bootup and make sure onboard audio is enabled.
