I've seen that sourceforge projects have a CVS, but never used one myself. Does any body here have experinece with a CVS? I assume its used for storing different versions of software. What advantages does it provide over creating multiple copies of files? Which CVS do you like the best?

CVS has been superseded by SVN (subversion). Both systems are used for version control but this is mostly for source files rather than compiled application binaries. They both allow developer collaboration by having a copy on the server in a repository and a local copy on each developers machine, the system is designed in such a way that, without locking the file, one developer does not destroy another's changes on the repository.
