Overclocking is basically making a component ( CPU ,RAM ,GPU) run faster than its factory preset speed. It is done in the computers bios or with software.
The benefits are Increased performance for no cost
The drawbacks are - Increased heat output
Risk of damaging components( Minimal with care)
Voiding of warrantys
Decreased component lifespan ( Not noticeable though)

It is also very safe to overclock these days. So don't worry about destroying your computer. The only way, is if you pump a lot of voltage, which someone stupid, would do.

Is this a pre-built or you built it? Sounds like a pre-built.

Then I'm almost 100% sure, you can't overclock....because the company that you bought the pre-built from, usually lock their BIOS of those kind of options, to prevent people from messing around with them.

Who did you get it from? Some Dells offer minuscule over clocking ability but I'm fairly sure that older comaq's and HP's are just as b1g said. Time to build a new pc! This is a great pc building time frame, it may get better as we head into Q4 of this year due to some price drops but all around a kick-butt gaming rig can come out of less than a grand if you know where to shop, and we know where to shop. =)
