For college I would definitely suggest using RAID -1 (mirror) then you won't lose any of your work. Also spend a bit more money on software for protecting your system, just make your you have 1GB+ of memory for the software to work with.
Personally I would get something like:
- AMD Athlon 64 3500 64Bit (32 Bit compatible) CPU Socket 939 or better
- 1Gb (2 x 512 Mb) Corsair TwinX, DDR500, PC4000PT, Cas 2
- 256MB ATI Sapphire Radeon X800 XT VIVO Platinum
- SATA 2x 200Gb Seagate Barracuda (7200rpm,8MB) - they are nice and quiet using onboard SATA controller.
- Asus A8V Deluxe WIFI G, VIA K8T800PRO, Socket 939, Dual DDR400, GB LAN, 1394, SATA RAID
Then you will need a case, monitor, software etc. Personally I would choose an extremely quiet case with stealth fans... I get so annoyed by the constant humming sound.
Hope this helps a little.
Actually 939 Athlon 64 FXs don't require registered memory, only socket 940 processors do .
