Laptop VGA Out

hey, on my moms sony laptop it has a vga out on the back of it, but awhile back we had problems with it and just installed a normal version of windows xp and well, we couldnt figure out how to get it back working, shes been looking at a new monitor and is eyeing the one im using but she wants to see how well it works and if she'd really need a new monitor, im downloading the intel drivers for it and gonna install those and see if it helps but any other suggestions?

there's a switch on some (like... [fn]+F8 or something) that'll switch between laptop LCD and the VGA port on back.
see if there's a similar switch on that one
if it's a VAIO, it should be [fn]+F7
