I need to get going on my Conroe build pretty soon. I was thinking of waiting a bit for dx10 cards but I need a box now with top o the line power. Budget needs to stay below 2k for the box.

mobo - Asus would be my choice but looking at the P5x series I do not know which one I need. I am not doing SLI yet I will be O/C'ing a little and want the best board for that. If I can get by with something else and be OK I am not opposed to that.

CPU - e6700 I suppose unless it is somehow worthy to spend double for an extreme 6800? How much more performance would I gain? I plan on O/C the e6700 so I am thinking I should be set there unless you guys think otherwise on the x6800?

GPU - No need for SLI as I might want to upgrade to a DX10 in 6-8 months down the road. So whichever ATI or nVidia card is rockin' right now will do. Is the 7950 1gb really a big jump over the 512 meg cards?

HDD - Prolly get one smaller drive for the OS and a few much used apps and games and one larger drive for storage. No need for scsi as SATA II should do the trick nicely. Maybe a 74G Raptor and a Seagate 500meg Sata II 16mb cache for the larger drive. Are those preforming about the best or what should I look at there?

Memory - 2 gigs of DDR2-800 Corsair? What latency and voltage works? I will be O/C'ing a little. I have used Corsair quite a bit in the past and it has always worked well O/C'ing.

Case-PSU - Case just needs to match the PSU well is all I care about. I assume the PSU could be as small as 550 or as large as 750. Just want it to handle the DX10 easily in the future and possibly I will slap a couple more hdd's too that are in other boxes I have running.

Thats enough to get started .. just some advice on what I need and other thoughts are appreciated. I do cad, 3ds, and a few games. Pretty much want to max it out though.

the only reason to get the x6800 ia just for the unlocked multipliers. The 7950 doesnt just have double the ram it has 2 gpus as well, so you basically have 2 video cards running through the same socket.

I suggest you rather go for the e6600 or even the e6400, i you're going to be overclocking anyway. The e6800 is just not worth it, the same way the FX60 and FX62 never were worth it!

If you're not bothered about SLi, I suggest the Gigabyte DS3, have read pretty impresive reviews, and for overclocking, it's the best you can buy now.

Could not find the 750w but this one looks up to the task:
PSU:
OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W Power Supply

Mobo: Back to Asus .. Just gotta go with the Asus mainboard. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131025

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145038

HDD: Still need to know about the hdd's. Would like to go with 74G Raptor and a Seagate 500G .. I do not think raid 0 would help me much but let me know your thought. Nothing to add another 74G and have a faster access time.

GPU: ATI 100-435805 Radeon X1900XTX 512MB

Need more help and a compatibility check!

Thanks

Wish I had that kind of money to spend on my new system...

So far everything is compatible. In all honesty, a 7900GT is going to run games pretty **** well and since you'll be upgrading, I would suggest getting that and saving some money and then go all out when the dx10 cards come.

The p5wdh and p5wdg2-ws pro from Asus are good OCing boards, Gigabyte DS3 is too, but a bit picky with ram it seems. For gpu, you could use a 7600Gt if you want to save up and wait for the DX10 cards.

So the list is this so far:

PSU:
OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W Power Supply

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16811112062

Mobo: Back to Asus .. Just gotta go with the Asus mainboard. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813131025

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16820145038

GPU: ATI 100-435805 Radeon X1900XTX 512MB

HDD: Still need to know about the hdd's. Would like to go with 74G Raptor and a Seagate 500G .. How about Raid 0 and two raptors? Or will two Seagate 7200rpm 16mb 80G drives in raid 0 be just as good and quiet?

Also can I go with faster RAM on that Asus board?

Are these components compatible and going to O/C well together or is there something I need to change?
