Hi guys,

I've ran out today and walked for 3 hours to the city to get a IDE to 2.5" laptop cable.

Cant install OS from laptop because no cd drive.

If i connect the laptop hard drive to my pc. Should i copy a win98 cd i have onto the hard drive (laptop) and plug it back in my laptop and install it there.

Or is possible to remove my pc Main drive put the laptop as the main and install xp on it and put it in the laptop. Will that work?

My main question is will any of the above scenarios work. I know xp cant be installed from dos unlike 98 but if can install xp on the hard drive and move it over i'm happy.

What you guys think.

I will be getting an external cd drive in the future

You can't put xp onto the hd in one comp then move it to another and have it work. Unless the comps are exact twins.
You really need the external cd.

Solution:

Formatted and Fdisk'ed the laptop hard drive.

Added laptop hard drive to desktop pc.

Copied the win98SE folder to the laptop hard drive.

Inserted laptop hard drive in to laptop boot to win98 boot disked.
Changed directory and did the 98 setup.

Once installed and running, i took it out and put it back in the desktop and copied over the I386 Xp folder to the laptop hdd.

Put it back in booted to win98. Ran winnt32.exe.

Which upgraded it to Xp Pro.

Now i have a working laptop with Xp professional installed and networking.
