I was once a hardcore gamer but now I know NOTHING about current PC hardware. My PC is five years old and I am considering an upgrade. It was bleeding edge in 2005 and it lasted me until Crysis when I gave up on PC gaming for a while (after upgrading to an 8800gt and still only able to chug along at medium settings at 1024x768 resolution). If I was to build a new PC today, or within the next few months, what would be my best bet as far as hardware? More specifically, what CPU, graphics card, motherboard, and RAM would give me the best bang for my buck these days? In addition, I am considering a new monitor as well. What is a good gaming monitor? Back in 2005, games looked simply awful if played outside a monitor's native resolution. Is this still the case today? If so, I want a monitor with a native resolution appropriate for whatever hardware I choose.
I am looking at spending no more than $1000 for the entire rig. A friend told me that over the past few years gaming hardware has become much more affordable. Thanks for any assistance!
