I think a normal flash drive would be fine, they can handle 20k+ read/write cycles so, replacing it once in awhile is a good idea, but I don't see them failing often, I have had one out of 10 fail in the last 4-6 years, and the one that failed was physically damaged.

Make sure you test that you can restore from backup as well.

Decided to go with the USB stick; 4GB for a tenner. It should last at least a year, which is good enough.

Since you all seem to think that the USB option wouldn't last as long as it needs to, I think I'll try and go the hard drive route.
