well first of all, we're not really average users here, are we?You are right, you could use most if not all of those functions in XP, you just have to KNOW what do download - something the average user won't know.
second of all, most people do understand how to use 3rd party antivirus and often antispyware software.
Though inevitably, viruses/trojans are going to be made to exploit human stupidity. The same will happen on Vista, and the increased security won't really do a lot to fix human stupidity.
while some of Vista's features will be an improvement in usability, there will always, always be bigger idiots that will still screw things up.
The easier you make things for people, the dumber people seem to get.
You only really need a few. And most 3rd party antivirus programs, etc will still be better than Microsoft's software (which most people will still use instead of Microsoft's software, even on Vista)But if you want the 'all in one' package for grandpa without installing 10 3rd party software programs Vista is a good choice.
