I had to look these up just now so this is not coming from experience. This looks like an RDX drive from Dell so it will probably take standard RDX cartridges, they most likely need formatting but the method for doing so will probably be just the same as it is for a HDD. In the USA they are $265 and in the UK they are £499 so no not expensive at all. Over here though I can see that at least HP, tandberg and imation sell RDX drives and they are considerably cheaper (than £500) I have not checked the US price for these drives but you might want to take a look at them. Compared to REV (which I thought was good until about 10 minutes ago) the drives are cheaper and usually come with a cartridge but from then onwards the cartridges are more expensive
