Yes, but stock vs. stock and mild overclock vs. mild overclock, the E8400 will get things done faster for now. Even when rendering video etc, the E8400 and E8500 beat out the Q6600 stock vs. stock. Normally I would recommend the Q6600 hands down, but he does pose a good point. If he doesn't plan on doing virtual machines or having 15 programs running at once, I think the dual core may be his best option.
Unless the Q6600 is cheaper, at which point that would be the obvious choice regardless of future plans for upgrading.
