Wait for the new Quad cores coming out soon if you are just looking around at the moment. If u want something now go with the E8400 or the Q6600. Both overclock very well, especially if you go for a good heatsink like the Tuniq Tower.

The 8800 GTS (G92) is an amazing card for the money. I believe it's in the top 3 on all of the benchmarks I have seen (for gaming that is.) I just got one with my new build last week and it runs Crysis on Very High settings at around 25-30 FPS. It absolutely demolishes everything else.

I have yet to OC my Q6600, but I don't really see the point right now considering it's handling everything I throw at it without any issues at all.

this is what I'd recommend for $1,000 because, its a common budget these days:

q6600
Abit IP35-e
8800gt (or hd3870)
Corsair 520hx
Crucial Ballistix 2gb Kit
Tuniq Tower 120 (people here complain about noise, but as I've never used one I wouldn't know, but you can always get another quite, but powerful one to replace the original)
add: Hard Drive, Case and Optical Drives that you like
