I'm starting to get into building computers, but first I'd like to know what tools or tips I should have.

-Types of screwdrivers... anti-static wrist strap.. etc..

What things do you guys use a lot, or couldn't go without?

Don't really need anti static stuff. You would want that though just to protect your computer just incase. Out of all the computers I built, and fixed, I haven't used any anti static stuff, and they still work great. Just got to know what you are doing.

  • Hammers (20 ounce framing, ball-pean, 12 pound sledge)
  • Hacksaw/Cutting torch
  • Duct tape
  • 16-penny nails (3" bolts will also work if used with hammer #1)
  • Bailing twine
  • Wire pliers (big ones)
  • Crowbar/slim jim
  • Bubble gum

If these can't fix it, ain't ain't broke (yet)

Actually, my tools are mostly software, but for hardware I keep:
  • Screwdrivers (Phillips and flat, as well as a set of precision)
  • Needlenose pliers
  • Flashlight (small and bright is best)
  • Paper clips (seriously, for opening jammed drives)
  • Magnetic rod, extendable (for retrieving dropped/fallen screws)
  • Thermal paste
  • Cotton swabs
  • Canned air
  • Alcohol
  • Band-Aids
  • Small zip ties

The list gets more extensive if you start into modifying your case:

- rotary tool
- cordless drill
- bits + blades
- mouse sander
- sand paper, medium and fine
- files
- jig saw
- and so much more....

The list can go on and on depending on how much work you're looking to do...but rotary tool is a staple for sure for case mods.

you only really need a philips screwdriver
anti static is not entirely needed, but not something you can completely do without...it's cheap and can be reused until you are dead

cpu paste - sometimes needed, depending on what you get

If you want to get into sleeving, which is extremely fun and rewarding...you'll often buy kits that have all the different tubing/sleeving sometimes ties...if not need those

and then if you do the above, get a heat gun, hair dryer is not going to do a good job ;)....and basic shears/scissors...and maybe a lighter handy to melt some stray threads
