The PS3 (and other consoles) handle their games so well because they are not running a full OS, and the games are hard-coded for their specific hardware and software.

If you took the hardware of a high-end PC, put a custom made OS in it that was for gaming only, then wrote games for that setup only, it would shred ANYTHING MS or Sony could come up with right now.
 
I'm not sure, if you can compare them, since the PS3 uses the Cell processor. I would think it's very different from desktop processors. I'm assuming the PS3's Cell processor is much more powerful....for gaming. I could be wrong....but I think overall, a high-end PC beats the PS3.
The PS3 does have more power.
But the Cell processors were only designed specifically for a certain kind of processing capability

AMD is actually thinking about going along that path, in its future CPU's.
