Trotter, they can achieve much more than that.

I can't find the link to where i read it, but a satellite providing broadband to something like 50 to 100k people can offer speeds of around 10mb or more, pretty decent speeds. Ofcourse latency would be bad, but if your not playing games latency is of little issue.


Finland has a mandatory speed of 1mb, The UK is doing something similar, by generating 50pence tax on every broadband user in the UK per month, they are paying to ensure 99percent of the population has access to atleast 2mb broadband within the next 8 or something years. Personally, while this may sound decent, i think it's pretty bad. 2mb is below average connection speed now, by 2017 it will be nearly useless.

There gov is spending 24Bn USD on putting 1gbps fiber in all the major cities, with 50 - 100mb for everyone else. You can certainly see what korea spend there money on.
