any one having this prob? Windows messenger seems to be on all the time, no icon in system tray, but others can see me online... if i try to run the shortcut from the start menu, nothing happens, also, i don't use outlook, or anything else M$ other than ie6, and when i try to close messenger (when there is an icon in system tray) it won't let me cause "other programs are running that use messenger features" even though nothing else is running, nothing...

help... i feel vulnerable...

Windows Messenger (XP SP1)
Version 4.7 (4.7.0104)

One possible way is Remove your Messenger from ur computer. And then reinstall from messenger.microsoft.com

To remove the messenger,
1)copy the following code to Startmenu>Run dialog textbox.

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

2)Hit Ok
Now the windows messenger will be removed(Uninstalled) from ur system.
3)now goto http://messenger.microsoft.com/download/download.asp?client=1

Here you have to choose windows XP.
4)install it.

it turns out the problem is with Norton AV 2003... the AV protection it provides for Messenger was keeping the exe open all the time... Disabling the protection in NAV2003 fixed the problem...

thanks for the input though...

i tried trillian a while ago, but i couldn't stop clicking on the messenger shortcut... maybe i'm brainwashed by the M$ Propaganda Machine...
