Can an XP Pro OS be installed on a external USB HD?

It's more trouble than its worth to get any copy of windows installed on any USB device. If you want a portable OS, use Linux; it's a lot easier to get running on a USB device.

If you do want a portable OS, then look into Lubi, LVPM, UNetbootin, and Bubakup - UNetbootin

You can easily put a version of Linux on a flash drive with that.
