The Windows Genuine Advantage feature was meant to warn users that they may be using a pirated copy of Windows, as stated below, it has also brought about a bit of controversy with it. It appears that there is now also spyware mimicking the software to get unsuspecting people to install all sorts of nastiness on their machines.

The malware has been classified as a worm and spreads through AOL's Instant Messenger program, said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, a security vendor.

I've already had to teach 3 people how to system restore because of an AIM virus this week, but I'm not sure if this is the same AIM virus.

Why dont you use the Aimfix?

This virus seems to see that it has AIM in the name, so if it wont let you download it, rename it to dead. I had to do this last weekend on my brothers pc. It deleted the virus after a few passes.

system restore wont always get rid of the virus though

Well, the way these people got it, one of their friends would say "Hey, check out me doing this radical stunt http://LOLCOOLPIX.com/LOLVIRUS.PIF"

They would download the file, and they got the virus. Anyway, if you got a system restore point before they downloaded it, then everything should be fixed.
