wiping my hard drive

I own a compaq presario SR1210NX and planning on using the recovery option that they have when it boots up. I guess it uses the D:\ and you have a fresh operating system.

I have a lot of music saved and want to keep it. What I want to know is whether or not there is any way of storing it on the computer, whether it be on the D:\ (which i cant do because it has a lock on it) or anywhere else. I dont want to use any sort of external memory.

why do you want to use the recovery option?
and i suppose your hdd does not have a partition.
i have the same computer in my kids room.
you can do a system restore and keep everything, or do a clean swipe and start a fresh, but without a partition i think you would be screwed.
