Windows hangs on log on

Whenever i log onto windows the computer hangs and won't load anything such as the start bar, desktop icons..although it does load the desktop background.

What I do to get it working is I use ctrl+alt+delete then log off that way. If i log on again everything loads up quickly and computer runs normally. I was wondering what could cause this?

I was thinking maybe a network drive but i have none connected..

Maybe a service that i have to have started.

maybe explorer.exe isnt loading properly at start up for some reason. most people will tell you first of all to do virus, spyware, etc.. checks in safe mode so i suggest you do that. have you installed anything which you think may have caused it?

yes i've done the antivirus, and spyware, and such safe mode it boots up. nothing comes to mind that could have caused it..
