recently, a virus infected my HD's boot sector and when i neutralized it, i found that when i try to open my hard drive by double clicking it it says 'not valid win32 application). i have to right click the drive and choose open or explore. is there any other way to cure this other than reformatting the drive. thanks...

If you boot off of your windows XP cd and at the first screen type "r" to get into the recovery counsol you should be able to fix the boot sector.

Once the Recovery counsol gets to a command-pompt like point type (with out quotes) "fixboot" and hit enter. Just to make sure everything is gone and fixed do a "fixmbr" as well.

I Do want to warn you though that some viruses don't completly leave the boot sector when they get "removed" and attempting to fix it only makes things worse. This was a huge issue back in Windows 95/98 days, not sure about now. Just to be safe I would back up all important data before doing this.
