Why does my computer start lagging while I'm in the middle of a game?

Everyone's right; the video card that is powering the graphics in the game is overheating, due to insufficient cooling, or maybe a broken fan that isn't powering up fully. It's reaching its maximum core temperature allowed, and scaling back the power to cool itself down.
The result? Less FPS in games than you'd usually get until it cools down enough to turn itself fully on again.

Test Everest like Foothead says, and also, try opening your computer cases side panel, so you can see all the components. See if this helps aid cooling, and it'll also let you check for too much dust around the graphics cards area, or if the fans failing.

Hope this helps
