I will be getting a MacPro 3.33GHz soon, and need to find the right Smart UPS system that will allow the MacPro to automatically save and shut down.

I've been searching through the specs on many Smart UPS systems and have found very few that list Mac OSX on the system requirements.

From memory, the Mac Pro runs a pretty big power supply (something like 1000 watt) so that it can run all the various combinations of multiple graphics cards, hard drives and all those other add-ons. So you're probably going to be looking at something pretty decent to protect your investment and provide enough juice to keep everything powered up long enough to save and shutdown.

Seeing that it's a Mac Pro, I'd assume that your a pretty specialised user and have some specialised gear to be running. As such, I'd probably suggest you speak to the guys that you will be buying your Mac Pro and equipment from. They could probably suggest a suitable power supply and maybe even setup for you.

The macpro uses a 720 or 750 depending on the location it was manufactured in, also PSU's draw only what they need but can draw a max of X number they say they can.
Also most of the USP's out there will support OSX if they support FreeBSD as the UPS management software is a direct clone of the ones included in the ports tree, I would suggest getting one in the 500 watt range as that is all you need for it to run 10 min and back everything up.

I called APC and they recommended this unit:

APC Smart-UPS 1500VA LCD 120V

They also told me that this UPS would work as well, as long as I don't overload the unit:

APC BACK-UPS RS 1300VA LCD 120V

I won't be doing any high-end work. Only one graphics card, one monitor (most likely a 21 or 23 inch), one internal HD, two optical drives. Sometimes I will have an external HD or DVD drive connected for backup
