im looking into making a mini lan party at my house. And i need some hardware tools to make some custom size cat5 calbes. So i would like to know where can i get my moneys worth on tools for networking. and just for kicks would samswarehouse have this stuff im going there tomorrow moring so just wondering.

oh and one more thing is it easy to connect the molds to the cables connector's.

I would go to your local supply house that supply tools/cable etc
to local installers in the telecommunications industry.

You dont want to skimp on the crimping tool or the connectors.

The better tools are generally designed to work with a specific
connector or a few connectors.

Paladin is a reputable brand........

A lot of places have the crimper/cutter tools for Ethernet, now. I've seen them at Best Buy. One of the more surprising places was Home Depot. They looked like very good quality tools, too. Home Depot also had spools of Ethernet cable (both CAT-5e and CAT-6), wall jacks that could be configured from 1 to 6 drops, cable plugs (the kind the crimper uses), wire ties, etc.

Go here for a descent intro to CATx cabling.

BTW, "IF" your project is going to be a good one, IMO, I would
use the same tools that the pros use everyday to install. If you
get good you can make some cables for your buds and make a
few dollars back on your investment.

When I decided to do an install of a satellite system for my mom
(first time and havent needed to since) I started to look into the
necessary tools and I can tell you, you will see/feel a difference in
the the quality of the crimp and the look of the connector end when
you are done by using a weak feeling crimper versus a crimper that
puts a "TIGHT"/"CLEAN" crimp on your connector.

This is where I got my tools/wire etc....

That's why I use an aqquired crimper that's very good :) Ok it's just decent...

Cat 5 is 10/100 rated cable, and cat5e is 10/100/1000 rated cable.

well i can see thats cat5e is better im just wondering if they are the same connection. and i think cat6 is different.

I was told to avoid using cat6 by a friend. Something to do with it being wound tighter and very breakable.
