What's Video Mem?

OK well if im not mistaken what exacly does the video memory (i think thats the name for it) do on a graphics card? Like I have a GeForce 7600GT 256mb<---what does the 256 of mb do??

its the same things as pc memory only for your video. just like a gpu is the same as a cpu but its for the video. its stores the information so your video card can run the processes, the same as a pc, the higher the better. in intergrated video cards it takes and uses the memory from your computer so if you had 512 youd have only like 504 cuz the video would use 8 of it to run.
