What's the latest on GPUs?

I plan to build myself an awesome computer when I get back home for summer break and am wondering what the latest news is on the GPU front. I've seen some nvidia 260s that go for about the same price as a 9800GTX and don't quite know which one is better and more deserving of a purchase.

I've looked in the new build thread and that has been extremely helpful but I would rather have a nvidia card than the ATI card recommended in the thread for my price range 850-1000 dollars.

Any help on the CPU and motherboard news would be great too!

Thanks

So, you basically need a whole build with a maximum budget of $1000?

The GTX 260 perform better than the 9800GTX+'s. The Core 216 version of the GTX 260 are some of the best cards on the market for that price point/in general.

The GTX 260 is a bit more expensive than the 9800GTX, but they perform much better. The ones to look for are the core 216 versions. They can be had for as low as $154 after rebate: GTX 260 core 216

Another card that performs better than the 9800GTX is the GTS 250. They are available as low as $105 after rebate.

What are you looking for in a CPU and motherboard? AMD or Intel?

This happens way too often between us. You should stop spying on me. To be fair, I can't blame you.

Here they are in order of performance:
GTX 295
HD 4870 X2 $400
GTX 285/GTX 280 $275-$330 (when the performance difference is under 5%, I group them together)
GTX 275/HD 4890 $235
GTX 260 Core 216/HD 4870 1GB $175
GTX 260/HD 4870 512MB $165
HD 4850/9800GTX+/HD 4770 $100-$130
HD 4830/9800GT $85-$95
I could go lower but do I really need to since your budget is $800-$1000?

The 295 starts at $524 worship, W/Backplate version at $544, and the Red Edition at $564

just noticed you didnt put a price for the 295 so thought i should say something, you probably forgot

Newegg didn't have any in stock and I CBA to look elsewhere :D

I was going to put POA because OP would probably be like  at the price.

Thanks for the great answers guys

Yeah, my budget for the new build is roughly 950 dollars. I dont want to go more than a thousand for sure.

I think the 260 core 216 will be good for my build but finding an accompanying Intel motherboard is being difficult.

I think once I have my motherboard it should be pretty easy from there.

I do need help finding a good and cheap case though. From what I hear the new cards are much bigger than the last time I built a PC (back in 2004).
