Check for updates once a week or something, and run a scan. Once a month, check for program updates also on the website, as you'll find standard updates don't work properly (yet doesn't say), with the older version.
I use the extra timer program too, which checks to see if you want to make changes before it happens, to the registry. Best to switch it off though when your manually installing a program.
