Better think twice about doing that.
WD is now using proprietary connectors (non-sata type) on the external drives so you can not re-use without the external case

I've done this with 14 of them now. I can even put them back together and ship them off under warranty. No problems yet

Unlikely they will do that with 8TB Externals... WD has for a long time done that to their slim 2.5in drives, but usually not to their 3.5in drives.

EDIT2: It's in xerolen's signature... Last time someones signature set off anything on my computer was back in 2004/2005 when I think Nubius or Harper had some code in their sig and it upset my AV.
EDIT3: Firefox rejects viewing the signature, but will load pages.

Yup.... those are the 2.5" drives so I can't say what WD is or has done with the 3.5" drives.
Don't know if or when WD will make a proprietary connector on their 3.5" drives, just a "heads up" for you

The WD EasyStores have regular WD Red drives in them; currently really popular to shuck.
