What would cause the sound to be bad in Unreal ?

A friend of mine has UnReal Tournament loaded on a Gateway 500 with a Voodoo 3 card and a soundblaster Live card. The music and everything is OK but the voices are big time distorted. Any suggestions?

Voices Over internet? Then get a faster internet connection

Do you mean the char voices or the announcer? Also make sure that the sound quality isn't on low.
