Privacy is almost always an illusion these days. Unless you really, really make an effort to hide yourself online (and even then census related stuff will always crop through) it's really quite easy for anyone to track you down.
Personally I've got nothing to hide so i'm not overly fussed. Plus I think this can be a good thing sometimes - if employers do this and find positive information, they'll be more likely to go with you! In this case I think it's best to say if you can't beat them, join them. The situation is unlikely to change, just be aware of it and use it to your advantage rather than trying to fight it.
