Waking laptop out of sleep

I have Dell Inspiron 1501 running Vista Ultimate. If I choose the sleep state in the start menu or if I shut the laptop cover or if I leave the comp sitting there for a while, it will go to sleep and when I try to wake it back up with a few mouse clicks or spacebar or something, nothing happens and I have to force shut down and reboot. It takes a lot of time and it sucks. Any help?

Did you try the function key? I don't know why... but my work laptop will only wake up with the Fn key.

uh. go to the control panel . POWER OPTIONS
and click select wat to do when turining off lid

Yeah the power options thing i already did but that didn't tell me how to wake it up. i tried the Fn key and that did nothing. I tried just tapping the power button and that woke it up but the screen is all tweaking out and flickering really fast, something I'm sure it's not supposed to do. My next move is to call Dell and ask them what is up and then maybe return it since it is still is warranty time. That is, unless someone can still help me.
