VGA to HD doesnt work

okay i got this one wire thats vga to HD, i hook it up to my TV (50") and it just shows a buncha random colors. what is the cause of this????????? i dont really get it!?!?!? hah thanks in advanced, my rig's in my sig if you needa know

theres an option in the display properties. are u using XP or vista?
