What components am I able to still use? I was thinking:

1) Keep: case, HDD drive, dvd drive
2) Replace: mobo, gpu, cpu, and ram
3) Not sure if I can still use the PSU?

I want to keep whatever is still compatible with newer parts and upgrade the PC with better budget parts. This PC will only be used to play Diablo 3 and Heroes of Newerth at high settings.

Recommendations for budget, new parts will be appreciated as well.

Thanks!

the case and dvd drive are probably fine. just to keep in mind, while the hdd is sufficient, i tend to start getting wary of them after 5 years.

i would recommend replacing all other parts, as the psu is won't be sufficient for any major upgrades to the gpu. if you arent doing any major or recent release gaming, then you may not have to upgrade the gpu to save money.

and i cant predict what your budget is. :)

what's the problem with the HDD besides speed? I'm not too worried about it failing or losing documents since I'll only be installing games on this thing.

I'm trying to shoot for $300ish for the parts I need. Don't need a monitor, OS, keyboard/mouse. It's fine if the games perform at med-high as long as there aren't lag issues.

if you're not worried about losing data or inconvenience on the chance that age catches up to it (from my experience) go ahead and use it. it's not new, but it is 7200 rpm. it's fine. it wont affect game performance, but it's possible that it will take (made up number) 15% longer for level load

What he is beating around the bush about is sometime in the near future you should grab an SSD ;)

I personally see nothing wrong with older drives as long as they have shown no problems of failing. I have drives over 8 years old still working perfectly fine.

300 bucks is going to be a toughy but maybe doable with an AMD rig.
