I had to format my computer and received this from Tech Support Guy:

{By the way my newly re-installed XP Home was slowing to a crawl until
I un-installed Akamai Net Session Interface. Now it's running like a dream.}
I used Wise Uninstaller

From Tech Support Guy:

These are the steps that I have been using for doing a clean reinstall of Windows XP SP3.

Note: These instructions apply to using a bootable Windows XP disc and NOT a system recovery/restore disc that reverts a computer back to its original factory condition with all the outdated and useless bloatware that came in it.

1. Boot from the Windows XP disc and then do a clean install of Windows XP.

2. Download and save and then install the full 316 MB Service Pack 3(SP3) upgrade.

Note: This step is needed only if your Windows XP disc does NOT contain SP3.

3. Download and save and then install Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP.

4. Download and save and then install the cumulative security update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP.

5. Install the needed drivers for your computer's primary devices(chipset, graphics, audio, ethernet, wireless, etc.).
Install the chipset driver first before installing the other drivers.

Note: You can save a lot of time and frustration if you complete steps #2 - #5 before you start step #1.
Burn those files to a CD-R or copy them to a USB thumb/flash drive or both.
Use that media to complete those steps.

6. Once all of the previous steps have been done and you have an active internet connection, load the Windows Update site and then do a "custom" scan.
When the scan is finished and the list of updates appears, uncheck ALL the high-priority and optional software updates that are associated with all versions of Microsoft .NET Framework.
Install the remaining high-priority updates and whatever optional software updates you choose.

7. Repeat step #6 until all the high-priority updates and desired optional software updates are installed.

Note: If an update appears in the optional hardware list for your computer's monitor(if it's a desktop and not a laptop/notebook), make sure to install it.
That will insure your monitor is properly recognized and configured so it can use all the available resolution/color/refresh settings.

8. Once windows XP is completely up-to-date, configure its settings and appearance to your liking.

9. You can now install your desired security-related programs and other programs and add-ons.

Note: Unless any of your programs and add-ons require Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1(which contains versions 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2) or Microsoft .NET Framework 4, do NOT install either version.
The install of either version and its numerous security-related updates will take a LONG time to finish.

Shouldn't even be on XP anymore unless you're a business with machinery that won't run on newer systems...
