understanding pci-e

I have just gotten a new computer and want to put a graphics card in it. In looking at the different types of cards I have no idea what will fit in my mobo. I know my computer has PCI-E x16 slots but most graphics cards I am looking at have PCI-E 2.0 or 2.1. I don't know if they will work with any pci-e slot or if i have to have a 2.0 or 2.1 compatible slot. Any explanations of pci-e slots would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks, I definitely don't mind reading as long as I can find the right info.

For all those other people wondering out there I found out that PCI-E 2.0 cards are backwards compatible with older mobos and that PCI-E mobos are backwards compatible with PCI-E 1.x cards
