manhandled laptop while still on.cannot use touch pad to move cursor may have locked something by inadvertently pressing numerous keys at once.

You most likely have disabled it. you do that with the FN key and some F1-F12 button.
Look after some kind of icon on the F keys that reticent the touch pad.

If you know the manufacturer of the laptop and model you should be able to go to google and find a manual online that will tell you..
