BEWARE SPOILER DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED HALF LIFE 2 EPISODE 2 OR PLAYED PORTAL

so, who is the G-Man? What are peoples theories?

i got some facts together on him and other game similarities, and this is what ive learnt so far after completing both portal and episode 2

1) the G-Man is responsible for the black mesa incident, because he gave the crystal to Eli Vance which set off the resonance cascade.

2) the G-man owns Alyx like he owns gordon. he saved her as a child from black mesa, but only for his own purposes, and against his 'Employers' wishes.

3) The vortigaunts in episode 2, in the mines, had to make their way by foot to help heal Alyx vance, which means they cannot teleport by themselves. however during episode 1, they appeared out of thin air, with a purple aura to them, to save alyx and to prevent the G-Man having any control over gordon. this suggests that when they use the larval extract to reach that state or whatever other method they use, they enter some sort of alternate reality. because of their ability to fight the G-Man in episode 1, this shows that they can enter that same alternate reality. when the vortigaunts use the larval extract, they explain that it is used to enter some state of higher being with the "vortescents".

this could lead to explain why the borealis ship vanished.

my theory on that ship links in with portal. the ship was owned by apeture science, who in turn created the Portal Gun. they experimented with the portal gun, until they entered some sort of alternate universe. the combine are also said to be from a completely different universe by Dr. Breen at the end of Half life 2. this could mean that the borealis, with the G-Man on board (a possible member of Apeture Science) encountered the combine after experimenting with the portal gun. however, at the end of Portal, after blowing up the computer, you see the outside of complex while you die, which looks very similar to earth. you also see in groggy bits of the test facility, after youve escaped the fire pit, signs such as:
man87.gif

4) apeture science also use the same technology as the combine. although not the same technology you see in half life 2, such as the black doors and black walls, you see turrets which sound the same (except for the silly voices) and use the same projectile. you also see the same energy balls which are captured by the same devices seen in episode 1 in the citidel.

5) if you use the portals to get a glimsp at the character in portal, you will see a curved piece of metal behind each leg, which looks very similar to Eli Vances prosthetic leg.

6) G-man uses alyx to pass on the message "prepare for unseen consequences" to Eli, which G-Man himself said to Eli right before the black mesa incident

thats all i can think of at the moment ill add more later.

EDIT

7) in half life 1, you see on the Gmans suitcase the black mesa logo.

8) during Route Kanal, inside the cargo container with the vortigaunt and the citizen, you catch a brief glimsp of gman on television, with a combine logo behind him, much like the Breencasts.

9) in opposing forces, the Gman is seen using a cellphone, although im unsure if that was meaningless or not.

10) the gman says at the beginning of half life 2 that "all the effort in the world would have gone to waste" which shows either:
a) nothing that the humans could do (which we all know) and its something the g-man allowed to happen
b) even g-man could not have prevented it, although unlikely as he says "all the effort in the world" and he is from an alternate reality.

11) although the Gman provided the scientists at black mesa with the sample crystal, a bonus mission in Half-Life: Decay follows 2 vortigaunts as they try to return the sample crystal to the nihilinth.
