So im at the point where I need a second machine, not because my other machine is outdated, but i need a second machine. And im looking to build a top notch pc, but i get discouraged to make a move because I hear that the socket 939 and 940 are soon going to be dead, and socket M2 is really the top notch base for the future. But how long will i have to wait for the M2 to come out, and is it worth the wait?

also, im going to be buying a socket 940 mobo with the OPteron 280, or a socket 939 with and Opteron 180, which one do you recommend?

m2 is most likely coming our next summer. It's quite much better than the 939 and 940, I think the biggest difference is that with m2 amd finally moves to ddr2 ram.

940 is Opterons and old FXs, so stay away. Get a 939 if you want the system now, and get a half decent CPU, i..e 3200+ or 3500+. That should last you quite a while.

M2 is released next spring, with 940 pins (no, old 940 boards cannot be used with it). It will take FXs, 64s and Opterons, and will need DDR2. Not much point in waiting though.

Get a 939 board with an Opteron if you can find a good one, otherwise get a 280 (Socket 940) and the Asus K8N DL, which is an excellent board!

yeah i save about 500 if i go with a socket 939 amd 180 config as oppose to a socket 940 amd 280, so i think ill do that.

939 Mobo will keep you going for the next few years. Still realeasing the latest chips in 939 config
