system freeze at startup

looking for some suggestions.
at startup the system seems to freeze up after the windows boot screen - screen goes black but monitor light is green.
this symptom first appeared after installing a new sound card (updated drivers) but has become worse with time.

i dont think the sound card is actually related to the problem

Try removing any hardware that you don't need to boot the system, then plug them back in one by one until the problem occur. That way you can figure out what hardware is causing the problem.

Take out the sound card. Boot into safe mode if you can then remove the card from device manager and reboot.

Or since you said you just updated the driver, boot into safe mode and roll back the driver to the older version from device manager.
