ok, so i just recently bought a netgear wireless usb adaptor for my upstairs desktop computer in order to connect it to the wifi we have set up down stairs, at this point everything is fine. i get on the net with firefox and play skylords for a while before i decide to try and update my game 'sins of a solar empire'. well before i can do this, i have to make an account with a program called impulse. i already knew about the program and knew it was already on my computer, but no mater what i did, it would NOT connect to the internet. i dropped every firewall, disabled all my security, removed every safeguard i could find to allow connections, but i didnt get anything. well, after a while, i gave up and turned back on all my firewalls and stuff, and connected to the internet just fine with a game called tremulous. when i was done, i tried to use firefox again, and my computer goes from the mild mannered machine i had saved to a bat **** crazy monster within 2 minutes. No kidding, I had windows swapping between active and inactive, windows with inverted colors, erratic mouse, the whole 9 yards. I reached down and held the power button for about 5 seconds.
When I turned it back on, I had to re-enable my active desktop (I use it to make custom hotkeys and maintain multiple desktops) but apart from that, everything seemed normal. I tried tremulous again, worked fine. I held my breath and tried firefox…….and it couldn't connect to the internet for ANYTHING!
I tried Eexplorer, worked fine! Soo, that's strange…but I still got internet, right? So I decide to try to connect with a few other games and apps.
1)runescape-not a chance.
2)tankionline- not a problem.
3)imvu- snowballs chance.
4)nexuiz- no issues at all.
I went and got a program called SPYDIG, I broke out my AdvancedSystemCare program, pulled up my webroot security, and used all 3 to scan and fix everything they could.
I didn't get anything but spyware cookies
Even my registry was in pristine condition
Well, after pounding my head into the wall for 2 days, I finaly gave up and decided to get some outside help
Soo, heres my theory. I removed all the possible methods (at least that im aware of) that could be used to restrict internet access and added these programs to every exception/trusted list I could find. I tested to see if it were my wireless by running a 60 foot Ethernet to the downstairs router AND to a laptop with wifi, same thing. Took my tower to a friends house and played battlezone2 over LAN with no problem.
Plain and simple, I think that something, weather its downstairs or on my pc, is deciding for me what programs get to access the internet. I think its on my pc because of the whole bug-out and rape firefox thing, but I don't know.
I got this computer from my uncle, and it has been put through all the online horrors a pair of teen girls could possibly send it through, so I've probably done more work on this computer than any other 2 computers combined. I have a pretty good amount of time, effort, and money invested into this thing, and im ready to do just about anything to make it work like its supposed to.
