i need to purchase a CD (of a free os i know, its retarded but i want to learn a linux os and my net has been F-ed up and i have little to no money to fix it) ANYWAYS i was wondering what recomendations you guys have for a noOB linux user (ive read most of the stickies but still need direct advice)

this is for a celeron @ 3.ghz w/ a 6200tc

i already have a copy of xp in the comp now obviously want to uninstall it but very new to this stuff, (its my second comp a VERY inexspensive build put together from spare parts)

i know some sites have some for of linux os for about 10$ on cd so thats what im looking to spend

thanks for the help

I also recommend Ubuntu. The new release rocks. I have "recruited" many people with it and they love it. The ship it thing takes a loong time so I recommend spending the $5 to buy it elsewhere.

NewIdea,

Again I am with Macdude on this I DO NOT reccomend Ubuntu and never will, however I Do reccomend Kubuntu (they also ship CDs free) but as other people in this thread have stated it takes a while so you would be better off buying them.

To this End I'd Reccomend you look at the links
cuiq has provided.

here is the Kubuntu shipit Link: https://shipit.kubuntu.org/

Or if you prefer PM me and I'll send you out a copy of a distro, I have over 50! I would be more then willing to do this for you

Now for a few Personal Reccomendations:

Mandriva

Use Ubuntu. Both my servers and my workstation run Ubuntu and have been up and running with no problems for months!
