Sound problem on Win XP Pro

My OS is Win XP Pro SP2. Browser Firefox V3.0.6. For some reason or other my sound keeps disappearing and reappearing. Yesterday I had no system sounds or on my speakers/headphones.

Restarting my computer doesn't resolve the problem. Shut down last night and booted up this morning, sounds are OK................but this is not always the case. When I have no sounds I check everything and all the settings are OK and the same as I have been using for a long time.

There really doesn't seem to be any pattern or any reason for this problem. Anyone got any ideas please?

What speakers are you using and what sound card? One of them has to be not working properly.

yeah, if you know you have the correct drivers loaded then it's definitely on the hardware end...

When I go into "Sounds and Audio Device Properties" it shows "Realtek HD Audio". My speakers are run of the mill desktop speakers.
