If you want to do a good scan now and then, try Adware Medic. It will help keep you clean without having to run into a ton of problems.

IMO it'd better to be proactive rather than reactive to malware issues. So only using a scanner doesn't protect you...it's just a cleanup method.

You are correct, but the amount of malware in the wild for Mac OS is so small that running a proactive software can be more problematic than not. At the end of the day, you have to weigh it out yourself and figure out if you want to troubleshoot multiple issues (and some are so strange you wouldn't think that they would be related to antivirus software being installed) or if you want to risk a possible infection.

Most folks that use Mac will download an infection that is written for Windows, so it doesn't infect the Mac anyhow. The best part of running an av is you are possibly protecting your Windows friends. Otherwise, Mac infections are pretty simple to clean off and less of a headache than the ongoing issues of antivirus, but then again, infection is possible and it can steal information, which isn't good.

So, use good judgement, folks! Sometimes dealing with conflicts (like antivirus) are a headache, but beat dealing with stolen banking information, etc.

That fact has been changing in recent years - as it gets to be a more popular platform, more malware will be written for it as it's a better target to source money from. That's why Windows is targeted so heavily - large user base.

I tend to think that we just hear more about it since there are so many that despise Apple for one reason or another. I'm not 100% that this list is completely accurate, but it's fairly close. Way different number than that of the PC world. Plus, the dates don't really show that big of a production increase.
