Semi Dumb Terminals

Hi,
At my school they have a network of Windows computers that allow you to login from anywhere at school and access your files. The thing is though it doesn't have the amount of lag that most dumb terminals have, which makes me think that the operating system at least is on the computer and a your personal share is mapped to the network drive. To back this up there are Windows XP and 7 Computers on the network and you can access your files from either. When you first boot the computer it goes straight to the login screen so there isn't any program I believe that is run to accomplish this, though maybe a custom image but it looks pretty stock. How can I do this for myself, I have a server and I'd like to make my computers at my home act like this for simplicity and ease of backups?
Thanks
