I remember a short story I read in high school in the course Science Fiction (it was an English elective). A guy developed a formula that will keep your brain alive and functioning forever. He gets the government to agree to preserve his body, but doesn't tell them what he has. he injects himself and dies, but his brain lives, and he can hear everything going on. He thinks he has cheated death. but then a colleague comes bursting in and announces that, because of this guy's research, they have discovery immortality, and no one will ever die again... and the dude can't tell them that his brain is still alive.

Pretty ironic.
