Can someone answer these questions for me? I've searched the internet but I'm finding it hard to locate websites that answer all my questions. Thanks.

1. Which is better and best?
2. Which is the latest technology?
3. For components, which is the way to go?

RAID is not an interface,

Raid is a configuration of hard disk drives.

SATA is the newest technology

SATA is the way to go.

Actually a lot of UltraIDE drives outperform SATA II drives. SATA is the newest thing otu there though, and RAID is just a disk linked with another disk to have some kind of performance gain. I.E Raid 0, 1 0+1 etc etc

Speaking of SATA.....did you guys know that SATA II is finally coming out for laptops?!?!?!?! Sceduled release is in May of this year also-------------along with the new Intel CPU codenamed "Santa Rosa", the next gen of the Centrino line CPUs!!

Actually you should back up your statements Jenox,

Current hard drives cannot even saturate PATA, what it all comes down to RIGHT NOW is the mechanical advantages of the drive it self, NOT the interface. There Definetly may be a better built drive with a PATA interface that outperforms some SATA Drives, but In Return there are SATA drives that are equal or even better than the PATA drives.

And since Hard drive makers are looking to the future, they are developing their drives around the current standard SATA not PATA which has been around for 20 Years...

These Drives perform about the same, But SATA Has more bandwidth headroom, Is the current standard, is Easier to Setup, and is Hot swappable, Smaller cables.

Thats why i recommended he go SATA.

Sata is the way to go. If you buy any type of new motherboard you'll most likely only get 1 IDE plug in. And thats going to go to your DVD drives. Plus IDE transfers at 133/mb max Sata2 transfers at 300/mb sec. Much faster. Sata1 runs 150/mbs sec which is still faster then the IDE. I guess If you really want IDE drives you could buy a IDE controller and waste a PCI slot.

Well, Raid is the way of the future, and the way of now. I haven't seen a server in a long time that didn't have a raid array setup. Especially with raid 5. There aren't as many that use SATA as do SCSI, but still RAIDed.
For basic setup and for extra storage space, I go with RAID 0, because it is striped(which means that data is shared on both drives), which doubles HD storage, but it is also not very fault tolerant. If one hard drive goes bad, the array is finished and the data on the other hd is no good. Whereas, RAID 5 combines striping and mirroring(if i'm correct). For example, if you have 4 80GB hd's in raid 5. Your total storage space is 240GB with 80 being reserved for data checking. In succession, the hd's are used to check eachother, thus eliminating unnessecary spin. In a raid array, you can dramatically lessen the lifespan of your drive. that was part of the problem with some other of the raid arrays. Lets say I have 3 drives. A, B, and C. I Install a windows hotfix on A: C is then updated as well, Now I install a hotfix on B: C is once again accessed. You will burn up that third drive twice as fast as the other ones.

Matt you need to read my post # 6 man so your better informed

Daeva i believe fretman is confused and was looking for what interface was better, and thought RAID was one of them.
