hi guys, just wanted to check before I order my new system, can I run my sata II drive on a sata 3 6g board or am I gonna have to upgrade the hdd, cheers Aussie13

SATA II/III are backward compatible. Any SATA device will run on SATA III, but not at the optimum speed.

Do you mean to say that a SATA II device on SATA III interface will run slower than it would on a standard SATA II interface? I always understood that a SATA II device on a SATA III interface would run at optimum speed (being optimum for the SATA II device, not the SATA III interface.)

What i mean is, with SATA (or any interface with multiple speeds) the fastest speed you can achieve is the maximum speed for the slowest part. In this case, maximum speed will be SATA II maximum transmission speed, rather than SATA III speed.

so yeah, how you understand it really

Like plugging a USB 1.1 Device into a USB 2.0 port - transfer is only as fast as the slowest part.
